Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
